Vision
Blayde has two main purposes:
1) bring swordfighters together in one international competition
2) make the elegance of swordfights accessible to a large audience.
This will be achieved by creating a platform which allows fighters to arrange for one-on-one duels. Duels are fought under the Blayde rules, a continuous-fighting based rule set in which points are awarded for deep and shallow targets, and fights can be ended immediately by a winning action: dominance, or disarm. Duels will be filmed and edited, and streamed to interested viewers. Fighters gain ranking points for each fight that was won, leading to national and international rankings. The tournament will be organized in a one year cycle, cumulating in the Blayde final tournament, where the top ranking fighters will be invited. The best fighter will be honoured with eternal glory as Blayde Master.
Road Ahead
To realize this vision, we must start with an attractive platform which brings together the fighters. Longsword will be the initial weapon of choice, given its immense popularity among HEMAists. As HEMAists, we know how to fight intensely yet safely, and we know the joy of competition.
The current planning to go live is around October-November of 2025. After live, there will be a half year “test tournament”, to get out platform bugs, test the whole system, and amass sufficient fighters for a competition in sufficient countries. A final “live” tournament is not foreseen at present, but we may award advantages to the winners of the test tournament for the first full tournament. The current planning is to start the first full tournament just before summer 2026.
In the early phases, Blayde will provide an additional competition format, allowing fighters to get together to determine who is best, and rise in the ranking by gaining ranking points. Duels may be fought in your own club, in a corner at an existing event where fighters get together, or at any other location the fighters opt for. Of course, we hope for locations which viewers would consider attractive: deserted nature, an abandoned factory, medieval ruins, all up to the fighter’s creativity, the available surroundings, and what is possible under local law for sport matches. Blayde provides the platform which brings the fighters together in a fixed rule environment equal to everyone, but it’s the fighters who arrange their fights, and make it into a competition.
In later phases, viewers may have learned the beauty of our sport, and appreciate the fights as a martial arts with weapons. We foresee viewers awarding their favorite fights or fighters with fan points, providing a bonus to the involved fighters. Fighters may gain a fan base, and sponsors may bring together those fighters which they wish to see in a duel, but which are too far apart geographically to arrange for a meet themselves. Further live tournaments may be organized, and/or further tournaments cycles featuring other weapons, or mixed weapon systems.
